The adorable sand cats at a zoo in North Carolina harbor a deadly secret.

Despite their small size and look that's similar to a house cat, these felines are considered the second deadliest cat in the world.

One family of five sand cats is a popular attraction at the North Carolina Zoo. While they look cute and cuddly, they are nothing like the domesticated cats in our homes.

The fierce creatures earned their reputation due to their high kill rate, hunting by skulking close to the ground and using a keen sense of hearing to detect prey.

Sand cats typically feed on rodents, birds, spiders, insects and are fearless snake hunters - including preying on venomous vipers, according to the Smithsonian National Zoo.

With their big eyes and ears atop a small frame - they weigh in at just four to eight pounds as adults - the cats are one of the smallest feline species.

Sand cats are rarely seen in the wild, due to their solitary nature and remote environments.

They are native to the deserts of North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Asia. They are typically nocturnal in nature and hunt at night to avoid the desert heat.

They are the only cats that live exclusively in desert environments, quickly adapting to extreme hot and cold temperatures.

Sand cats prefer a very dry habitat and are able to get enough moisture from their prey. They are sand-dwelling creatures, inhabiting dry plains and rocky valleys, according to the Smithsonian National Zoo.

Their fur is typically sandy colored or a gray-brown, and they tend to escape extreme temperatures by digging burrows.

They tend to have stripes on their legs and two or three rings and a black tip on their tails, which can stretch 11 to 14 inches relative to their 18-to-23-inch body length.

The cats, which have been difficult to study, can live up to 13 years in human care.

The triplets at born at the North Carolina Zoo, to mother Sahara and father Cosmo, are now two years old and will soon move on to other zoos.

They are currently separated by gender due largely to their solitary lifestyles.

The small but deadly feline is second only to the black-footed cat, which was crowned the most lethal.

Black-footed cats look similar to tabby cats but get their name for having black or dark brown soles or pads in their paws.

The equally adorable creatures are projected to successfully capture their prey 60 percent of the time, according to Amanda Collins, vice program leader for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums black-footed cat consortium.

Black-footed cats are carnivores, preying on rodents, birds, reptiles, insects and spiders.

The number of black-footed cats in the wild are decreasing despite their impressive hunting skills, and the species was listed as vulnerable - just one step before endangered - by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resource.
